
Diagnosed incident melanoma cases across the eight major markets are projected to rise from 229,000 in 2025 to 263,000 by 2035. This forecast covers the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. The upward trend highlights the continuing burden of skin cancer in developed nations as populations age and exposure risks persist.
The United States is expected to record the highest number of cases among these nations. Analysts project more than 130,000 cases in the US by 2035. Canada is expected to report around 14,000 cases, while the five major European markets combined should see about 88,000 cases. Australia is projected to account for approximately 21,000 cases over the same period.
The five major European markets included in the report are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK. These regions, along with North America and Australia, make up the dataset. Australia reported the highest incidence rates relative to its population size.

Drivers Behind the Numbers
The report identifies ultraviolet (UV) radiation as a major risk factor for the disease. Australia’s significantly higher incidence rates compared to other markets are attributed to specific geographic and demographic factors. Its location in the southern hemisphere places it closer to the equator, resulting in higher UV levels.
“The discrepancy between incidence rates of melanoma in Australia and those in all other markets may be explained by a combination of its location on the southern hemisphere, its proximity to the equator, and a considerable number of its population with fair skin,” said Robyn Jones, an epidemiologist at the firm. This combination creates a unique risk profile for the region.
This geographic disparity often serves as a benchmark for understanding how environmental factors interact with genetic predisposition in oncology. While the US leads in volume due to population size, the intensity seen in Australia provides a clear model of how climate and demographics can accelerate disease prevalence. Public health responses in these nations usually diverge based on these specific risk profiles, with high-risk zones adopting stricter screening protocols.

Stage at Diagnosis
Stage 1 melanoma accounted for the largest share of diagnosed incident cases across all eight markets. Proportions varied by country, but the dominance of early-stage cases was a consistent finding. The report notes that this high rate of early-stage diagnoses reflects growing public awareness.
“These are likely attributed to public health protection efforts aimed at increasing awareness of how melanoma presents, alongside multi-pronged interventions to curb UV exposure,” Jones said. Campaigns focusing on sun safety and skin checks appear to be the driving force behind this trend.
The data indicates that while the total number of cases is increasing, the medical community is finding these cancers earlier than in previous decades. This shift in staging distribution is a critical metric for evaluating the effectiveness of screening programs for patients. It also suggests that mortality rates may stabilize even as incidence climbs.
