In the historical center of a small town on Lake Maggiore, the intervention of restoration has renovated the interior of a house of the ‘700, with a new lay-out on multiple levels which preserved the architectural features of the local tradition. The works of consolidation has added the construction of new connecting stairs between the floors, and the complete revision of the finish; spaces and reduced heights suggested ad hoc solutions that exploiting niches and crannies to retrieve useful centimeters.

The renovation has made it possible to link the three levels of the building and so draw an apartment with functions distributed in height, also exploiting the attic; Internal walls have been kept to a minimum, only partitions are those that surround the service areas. At the entry level, about 23 sqm, accessible from the gallery, there are a kitchenette with a dining area and laundry room, above the living room and the bathroom (also 23 square meters), higher still, the loft of 19 sq.m. , there is the bedroom. The very structure of ancient rural construction is characterized by the oblique of one of the outer walls, thick: an architectural trait exploited at best and “camouflaged” as solutions.

Floors with reduced thickness: between the different floors of the house were rebuilt under renovation, using a more modern building system that allows you to reduce the thickness and to gain centimeters so as to increase, at different levels, the height of the ceilings rather meager. The support structures are made of iron girders anchored to the walls; beams rests on the wall of boards, made up of oak boards with 4 cm thick; the latter then simultaneously perform the function of the ceiling of the lower floor and the upper floor. The total thickness of the slabs, inclusive of beams and planks, thus proves to be of only about 20 cm.

In the living room fireplace area plays an important role, the protagonist, in an environment at the same time sober but friendly: on the wall next to the fireplace the metal floor insert “rises” in a comfortable bench covered with red cushions, drawing a well angle for reading and relaxation. The original fireplace has been modified by installing inside a cast iron stove connected to the chimney existing. Centrally located in the room, the staircase leading to the loft also marks the division of space. Strongly connoting the overall effect is also the floor in antique oak, very natural: the very essence used for the steps of the ramp. • Stove: Stuv

In the living area the new structures of the ceiling, with iron beams and planks of wood, become a characteristic trait of the different environments. Even the fixtures which have replaced the original ones are of wood, in this case all in white lacquered.

In large indentation conversation area in the wall thickness behind the sofa, in correspondence of a pre-existing passage, it is now equipped with shelves. Large French doors overlooking the balcony illuminates this corner of the living. In the corner of the dining area near the window a ramp with lightweight construction in iron plate – protected by a tempered glass panel – connect the upper floor where the living. A mobile bottom-day shields the base of the stairs. In the festive area the floor is in natural cement: to protect the surface from stains and moisture has been painted with a transparent product of those typically used for wood. Kitchen and dining table, which can be found in the unique on the entrance floor, but will take two distinct areas, even stylistically. The operating area is highlighted and defined by dark brown painting of the walls that surround it, in contrast to the white of the other. In the bathroom the bath area is identified at first glance by the coating to ceiling mosaic, while on the other two walls are installed sink and health: Pausing and small type, are attached to a thick false wall about 10 cm which reinforces the wall and contains the plants, integrating two useful storage niches. Even in the attic, where there is the room, the facilities, in this case the wooden roof, are exposed. At the center of the volume, in correspondence of the scale, the double-height zone allows the facing the lower floor and facilitates the passage of light. The room, on the mezzanine, is lit by two large horizontal windows open scratch under renovation. The central volume of the stairwell divides the room into two areas, that of rest and study area. Leaning against the balustrade, the mini library drawings in wax-treated wood, is of the same type as in the living room.
